The final of the Stockman’s Challenge commences on Wednesday 10 September at Westech.  10 horses and 6 riders have made it through the preliminary events and will be competing at the final.

Westech Rural Scholarship

The Westech Field Days Association Inc and Queensland Rural Adjustment Authority (QRAA) will provide a Scholarship of up to $4000 for a person living in a rural community or working in a rural industry to be applied towards a course of study or training that will further develop the skills and/or knowledge of the applicant.

The aims of the scholarship are:

  • to encourage rural people to advance their skills or knowledge
  • to encourage people to use their skills and knowledge to improve rural industries and the quality of life in rural communities
  • to financially support rural people to undertake further study.

Conditions of Entry

  1. Applicants must be 16 years of age or older.
  2. Immediate family members of the judges are ineligible to apply.
    Judges will be:

    • Jennie Gray (Deputy Mayor Barcaldine Regional Council)
    • Dave Arnold (General Manager RAPAD)
    • Bill Fletcher (Client Liaison Officer QRAA)
  3. Entries must be post marked by 5PM on Friday 22nd August 2008. Late entries will not be accepted. Entries may be sent by fax or email.
  4. The applications will be assessed by a panel of judges. Finalists will then be selected and will be required to attend an interview on Tuesday 9th September 2008 (first day of Westech). The winner will be announced during Westech Field Days.
  5. The scholarship is to be used towards expenses incurred prior to 31st December 2009 (although the course of study may extend beyond this date).
  6. Eligible expenses include course fees plus travel and accommodation to attend the course.
  7. The scholarship will only be paid on confirmation of course enrolment and presentation of appropriate receipts or invoices.

Please answer the following questions to support your application.

  1. Outline how you have been involved in a rural community or industry.
  2. Briefly describe your intended course of study.
  3. Outline the skills and knowledge that you hope to gain by completing the course.
  4. Describe how you will use the skills and knowledge gained to develop either rural communities or rural industries or your role in these areas.

Entries must be typed and limited to two A4 pages. No support letters are necessary. Attach this page to your application.

Westech Handbook

The Queensland Country Life will be publishing a special Westech Field Days Handbook which will be distributed within their weekly paper to all regions within Central West Queensland and surrounding areas.  In addition, 5000 copies will also be handed out at the front gate to patrons of the Field Days.

Advertising and editorial space is available in this handbook.

Best of the West - Final

On Wednesday, September 10th 2008 at the Westech Field Days in Barcaldine there will be a new horse competition.

It is called “The Westech Best of the West Final” and will feature ten horses and their riders competing over two rounds (ridden pattern and cattle work). The ten will have qualified from eight challenges in the Central West, held from April through August 2008. Points will be allocated at each event, from 1st to 10th place. The top ten horse/rider combinations will then be invited to attend Westech and compete in the final.

The 8 qualifying challenges will be:

  • Tambo Show - 26 April 2008
  • Blackall Show - 3-4 May 2008
  • Longreach Show - 16-17 May 2008
  • Alpha Show - 20-21 May 2008
  • Isisford Sheep and Wool Show - 24 May 2008
  • Winton Show - 6-7 June 2008
  • C&W Branch ASHS Challenge - 2-3 August 2008
  • Stonehenge Challenge - 16 August 2008
